History of Ancient Greek Army

The ancient Greek army developed and evolved over several historical periods and encompassed various tactics, strategies and military units. Here is an overview of the Greek army in ancient times:
One of the most iconic units of the Greek army was the hoplite. These were heavy infantry soldiers armed with a large shield (called “hoplon” or “aspis”), a long spear (called “dorú”), and a short sword. The hoplites fought in a close formation called a “phalanx”, which was a compact line of soldiers with their shields overlapping.

The hoplite phalanx was an effective defensive and offensive formation that relied on collective strength and discipline. The unit moved as a block, protecting the soldiers and allowing them to advance against the enemy. This tactic was especially effective on flat terrain.

In addition to hoplites, the Greeks also had cavalry units. Although not as prominent as phalanxes, Greek horsemen played roles in battles and recognitions. Cavalry provided tactical flexibility and the ability to maneuver on the battlefield.

In summary, the ancient Greek army, with its hoplites, cavalry and other units, played a crucial role in the military and political history of ancient Greece, leaving a lasting legacy in military strategy and tactics.

The Greek army in ancient times, especially during the archaic and classical periods, underwent several evolutions

Hoplites were the most prominent citizen-soldiers in the Greek city-states, especially Sparta and Athens. They fought as heavy infantry armed with large shields (hoplon), spears (dorú) and short swords. They were equipped with bronze armor, usually consisting of a helmet, cuirass, and greaves.
Hoplites were essential, the city-states also had cavalry (hippeis) and archers or slingshots to complement their forces.
